PTA Council forum to question Madison candidates on education

A flurry of recent public meetings has been introducing the public to candidates in municipal elections. Madison City Council of PTA is hosting a political forum focused on a high-ranking source of city pride — education.

The PTA council forum will be held on Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. in Zompa Auditorium at Bob Jones High School.

 A panel composed of a Madison parent, teacher and school board member will question candidates. Venton Blandin with WHNT News 19 will moderate. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Individuals can submit questions advance questions for the candidates by sending email to madisoncitypta@gmail.com.

“The PTA Council is sponsoring this event to shine a spotlight on the importance of education to our city,” council president Sonja Griffith said. Griffith said. “The high quality of public education in Madison has contributed to its explosive growth and increased our property values.”

The forum’s format “will cover education and interests of families with school-aged children, questions that focus on city governance, the candidates’ various priorities and how the candidates plan to meet the needs of a growing city as a whole, if elected,” Griffith said. “There are many competing interests for a finite amount of funds.”

The forum will serve as a public service Madison citizens, “many of whom have moved here recently. They can hear what the candidates have to say before this very important election” on Aug 28, Griffith said.

The PTA Council is a non-profit organization and will not endorse any candidate. The council represents PTAs across Madison and hopes that parents, teachers and concerned citizens will attend.

The council is composed of PTA executive boards from all Madison schools. Along with Griffith, council officers are vice president Devonee Woods, secretary Amy Moore and treasurer Lenore Sieg.

The Madison City Council of PTA is a non-profit organization that coordinates and assists the individual PTAs in Madison City Schools. The council promotes the welfare of children and youth and encourages partnership between parents, the community and schools.
