Screws to present one-man-show for James Clemens Theatre

TV personality and anchor Greg Screws will present his one-man show, “Proppin’ Up,” at James Clemens High School on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

Screws actually volunteered for the appearance after reading on Facebook that James Clemens Theatre’s prop closet is empty, drama teacher Amy Patel said. Patel and Screws are longtime acquaintances and worked together on a production at Merrimack Hall two years ago.

“Greg is doing this completely as a gift to James Clemens Theatre, which is just fantastic,” Patel said. “James Clemens Theatre will receive 100 percent of ticket sales. We will use the funds to purchase scripts, costumes, makeup and construction materials for our upcoming shows.”

In addition, students will accept props donations, “which can be just about anything — lamps, suitcases, hats, briefcases, books, costumes, furniture and flower pots,” Patel said. “You name it … we can use it.”

“Proppin’ Up” is a combination of stand-up comedy and storytelling. “If you spend any time with Greg, you’ll see that he has lots of stories from working in TV news, meeting so many people through the years, raising his daughter and now having a grandson,” Patel said. For each show, Screws uses photos, videos and develops Top 10 lists and commentary.

During the second act, Patel will call theatre students to the stage for improvisation with some of Screws’ “Deal or Dud” products. “We’ve even planned a bit appearance by me,” Patel said. “I’m looking forward to being onstage with Greg again.”

“It’s your chance to hear some accuracy-challenged storytelling and watch James Clemens Theatre students improvise with an old guy,” Patel said.

On March 7-10, several James Clemens students will attend the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Louisville, Ky. to support Bob Jones Patriot Players, attend workshops and meet with college representatives.

Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults and available at showtix.4u.com and at the door. For more information, call 256-216-5313, ext. 95135, email to appatel@madisoncity.k12.al.us or visit Facebook/James Clemens Theatre.
