MADISON- It was the closest James Clemens has come to defeating Bob Jones in a major sport this season. Monday night, tied 1-1 after regulation, the girl’s soccer teams played on through two scoreless five minute sudden death overtime periods.

Bob Jones won the shootout 3-2 as each team got five shots on goal.

James Clemens has two area wins over Lee Huntsville this season but played inspired as they tried to avenge a 6-0 loss to Bob Jones on March 20.

“Tonight we played our best most complete game,” said James Clemens coach Jeff Zmistrowski. “We didn’t take advantage of some the opportunities we had. Taylor played an awesome game and the defense played well. They kept us in the game and allowed our offense to poke one in and tie it up.”

Unfortunately for Zmistrowski the game came down to goal kicks and Hannah Lingerfelt and Megan Arnett’s kicks sailed high and the Jets were in a 2-0 hole when Darby Rasch and Chandler Austin drilled their attempts past Jets keeper Taylor Carter. Kelly Cashon and Alexa Wade made their shots but Bob Jones’ Anna Gierow made the winning shot.

All the scoring in regulation took place in the first half. Darby Rasch put Bob Jones up 1-0 on a long corner kick that sailed just over Jets keeper Taylor Carter at 24:30.

Kelly Cashon got the equalizer at 15:08 when she nailed a free kick over Bob Jones keeper Cassie Russell.

Bob Jones was missing four starters and it showed as the Patriots struggled on offense possessing and driving the ball.

Two key players missing were leading scorer Hannah Snoddy and Avery Batson who runs the offense from her midfield position. Ellen Bruno went down with an ankle injury and did not return.

In the second half, Bob Jones had a shot going in but Kayla Cleveland mistakenly stopped the ball.

The Patriots had already clinched first place in the area.

“We had a lot of injuries and some players not here and as the game progressed it was a physical game and we lost one player to injury,” Bob Jones coach Tony Schroeder said. “We had the area won on points but we wanted to go out with an undefeated record. James Clemens came and played very well and very hard. They wanted this game. We just missed some opportunities.”

Alexa Wade had James Clemens’ best shot to win the game when she had an uncontested shot on goal late in the second half but it sailed wide and regulation ended 1-1.

Jets keeper Taylor Carter made a diving save just before halftime and another at 12:06 in the second half.

Bob Jones keeper Cassie Russell saved the game when she stopped Wade’s point on shot in the second overtime period.

James Clemens finished second in area play with a 2-2 record and will make the playoffs that start April 26. The Patriots had already clinched first place in the area.
