School community reacts to Memon sentence

MADISON – On May 28, Hammad Memon pled guilty to the murder of Todd Brown. Memon, now 17, shot Brown in the back of the head during class change at Discovery Middle School in 2010.

“The events of February 2010 affected many lives. We hope that today’s action brings some small sense of closure to those whose lives have been irreparably altered,” Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said.

Other Madison City Schools officials declined to comment on Memon’s plea and sentence.

In addition to his prison sentence, Memon must pay a $10,000 fine, court costs and restitution to Brown’s family.

Memon and attorney Bruce Gardener agreed on a plea deal with Assistant District Attorney Tim Gann. Memon was sentenced to a 30-year prison term, with parole eligibility in 15 years.

Brown’s family had hoped for a life sentence for Memon, WAFF reported.

Fowler declined to comment further because “there is still a civil case pending.”
