MADISON – Dr. Terri Johnson serves on the Madison Board of Education to confirm “all students in our school district have equal educational opportunities.”

Johnson wants those options to include extracurricular activities, regardless of which school they attend.

Before appointment to the board in April 2007, Johnson had volunteered often at her sons’ schools. At Horizon Elementary School, she coached the math team for five years and helped with tutoring for four years.

“My number one responsibility is to work with other board members and superintendent to develop a vision for our school district,” Johnson said. To materialize that vision, the board set goals for the superintendent and staff. A prime example is realizing the need for a second high school.

She also must make sure the district is “fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars.” Since 2007, she has served on the finance and capital planning committees. Her most time-consuming task is staying informed about the district and identifying improvements in education for Madison children.

“I’m most proud of our students,” Johnson said. The board enjoys meetings at which students are honored. “We’ve recognized students for outstanding academic, athletic, artistic and humanitarian achievements. I’ve been inspired by individual students more times than I can count.”

She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and master’s and doctorate’s degrees in applied mathematics at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Johnson works as a full-time lecturer in the UAH Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Terri Johnson moved to Madison in 1986 when she married Greg Johnson, a software engineer for Northrop Grumman Corporation. Their sons are Russel, a graduate of Bob Jones High school and Auburn University; Charlie, also a Bob Jones alumnus and an engineering student at AU; and Mark, a Bob Jones freshman.

The Johnson’s sons are swimmers. A certified USA swimming official, she officiates at regional swim meets as a volunteer for Bob Jones and the Madison Swim Association. The Johnsons are members of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she volunteers with youth.
