Haws’ work at YMCA earns Eagle Scout rank

MADISON – Seth Haws has reached the rank of Eagle Scout by completing a beautification project at the Hogan Family YMCA.

Seth was motivated by his brothers, Ryan and Ronnie, who became Eagle Scouts. “The main reason I started Scouts was because I saw what they were doing and how much they liked it,” Seth said. “I was also encouraged by them to make the final push towards getting my Eagle.”

For his project at the YMCA, Seth applied mulch around all trees and parking lot islands and trimmed branches overhanging cars. He and members in Troop 576 also refurbished and installed two donated benches.

The service project required about four weeks. “We had to use (several) wheelbarrows for the mulch, clippers and trimmers for the trees and a trailer to move the mulch to and from the site,” Seth said. “On the benches, we had to use a sander and steel wool to clean them up and also paint to make them look nice.”

YMCA director Andrew Freeman supported Seth’s project. “I would like to give a shout-out to Cory Brown with the Cat Bird Seat. He provided mulch at such a good price. Most of the Scouts in my troop helped in some way,” along with troop leader Jonathan Jones, Seth said.

Seth attended Rainbow Elementary School, Madison Academy and now is a senior at Bob Jones High School. He has been an honor roll student throughout his school years.

His parents are Ron and Dr. Pam Haws. “My dad is a contractor for Redstone Arsenal and my mom is a doctor. I’m the youngest of five,” Seth said. His siblings are Ryan, Ronnie, Sarah and Sadie.

In August 1997 when Seth was one year old, the Haws family moved to Madison from Troy, Ill. for his father’s work with the U.S. Army. The Haws family attends the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Madison Stake on Slaughter Road.
