The event “will raise money to support Community Assistance Salute Grants,” club publicist Olga Hansen said.

These grants assist retired veterans, active military personnel families, military museums, community ministries and child education organizations, Hansen said. Some funds pay for families’ utility bills, toys for children, books and other education materials.

“With this event, our goal is to raise $5,000,” Hansen said. In the past 12 months, the women’s club has donated $7,425 for Salute Grants to eight community organizations.

Guests will enjoy a meal at The Summit Restaurant on Redstone Arsenal. A cash bar will be available. Club members will present “The Basic Black Dress,” a skit performed by Army spouses since 1954.

“The skit shows in a humorous way the ever-changing life of an Army spouse and just how versatile the basic black dress is throughout their lives,” Hansen said. “Whether they are changing location or entertaining, the basic black dress gets them through.”

Silent auction items will include two ‘Beautiful You’ makeover baskets from Elleven Salon; craft brews, Blue Pants Brewery; gourmet food basket, Fresh Market; and a wine and margarita basket.

Hansen said all residents, retired military personnel and friends are invited. With these events, “we maintain our links with the past while building a bright future for not only ourselves but for those people who need help. People will make a real difference when they attend.”

The club fosters and preserves good fellowship with educational, cultural and fun activities “while maintaining our military roots and empowering individuals through camaraderie and networking,” Hansen said. Anyone associated with Redstone Arsenal can join.

Current officers include president K.C. Bertling and first vice president Bonita Owens.

Tickets are $30 and available at The Summit office or by calling second vice president Janie Fogg at 256-325-3386.
