Salvation Army asks for children’s Easter baskets

MADISON – The Salvation Army is asking residents to help fill Easter baskets for local children.

“Each year, we pass out Easter baskets to children whose families receive services from us or come to our community kitchen,” Lydia Pennington said. “This little act of kindness brightens the faces of these little ones.”

Pennington works as volunteer and special events coordinator for The Salvation Army in Huntsville.

With Easter on April 20 this year, The Salvation Army now is accepting Easter basket donations through April 16. “You can bring baskets to the office at 2114 Oakwood Ave. or contact me to make other arrangements,” Pennington said.

Pennington asks donors to label baskets with the gender and approximate age of the child to receive it. Children from two to 12 years old will receive the baskets.

“If you can’t provide a completed Easter basket, please feel free to donate items that can be used to make extras,” Pennington said. “Donors often fill the baskets with candy, books, little toys or anything suitable. Other people choose to purchase pre-made ones instead.”

“Thanks in advance for helping to put smiles on children’s faces this Easter season,” she said.

In other outreach for children, The Salvation Army will open registration in April for summer camp programs. Camps are available for children who do or do not participate in corps programs, like Boy Scouts and Sunbeams.

Camp Hidden Lake supports the spiritual, physical, emotional and social development of children, youth and adults. Some campers learn a new skill, develop relationships or learn about Christian service.
