Numerous Madison students advance to state science meet

MADISON – Madison City Schools will be well represented at the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair.

Madison students advanced to state at the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Liberty Middle School had four first-place winners, coordinator Carla Beardslee said. Amy Lyons also assisted students with science projects.

Akash Ojha earned first place in medical and health; Sophie Guo, first, engineering and special Award from UAH Women Engineers; Vijitha Kantety, first , plant science; and Jonathon Marcus, first, environmental science, $50 from Army Corp Prevention and Research of Catastrophic Disasters and Solutions.

Jacob Kassama ranked second for medical and health and received a military special award. Taylor Romanczuk won $100 from IEEE and $25 from Huntsville Optical Society. Kaylyn Bagley, Jenny Cox and Andres Montoya earned several special awards.

Beardslee has asked state judges to ‘face-time’ with Liberty winners, because Liberty Band will be in Disney World during the state fair. “We’re hoping for the best,” Beardslee said.

From Columbia Elementary School, Courtney Horn will advance to state. Honorable mention recipients were Laura Brady, Joshua Lingo, Jason Pollard, Reed Thomas, Kennedi Nichols, Chelsea Cochran, Katie Beth Davis, Kyle Bucceri and Kailen Thomas.

Lingo, Cochran and Davis also received special awards. Columbia sponsors are Lisa Grice and Charles Sturdivant.

From West Madison Elementary School, Breiahnna Crawford received third place in the environmental division and a special award with first place at the UAH awards ceremony.

In addition, Aneesha Ankam and Anna Crouse were finalists. Jordan Jackson took third place and a special award.

West Madison students earning honorable mention were Jonathan Byers, Ethan Horne, Jordan Jackson, Ryan Langston and Dylan Coleman.

Whitney Lawrence and Holly McKnight are West Madison sponsors.

UAH also will host the state science fair on April 4-5.
