MADISON – The Madison Academy Mustangs (2-1, 1-0) scored in the first 10 seconds of Friday’s matchup against visiting West Morgan and never looked back en route to a 53-0 win in the Mustangs’ first Region win.

“Hats off to our younger guys – that second and third team – that was able to keep them out in the second half,” said head coach Eric Cohu after the game. “I’m proud of those guys.”

Blake Coward’s pass to running back Kerryon Johnson, a 52-yard touchdown, got the scoring going in the first quarter. Johnson was the team’s leading receiver, accounting for 117 of Coward’s 136 yards through the air and showing his versatility in the offense.

Madison Academy dipped into their reserve ballcarriers, giving carries to KiKi Matthews and Jonathan Parish after Malik Miller and Blake Wimberly scored touchdowns of their own.

“We just did our job; we needed to score points early,” said Cohu, referencing the lack of points Madison Academy had seen on its first drives in the first two games. “They executed well and our offense came out and did well the entire first half.”

Parish led the team with 90 yards rushing. The Mustangs outgained the Rebels 403-165. Madison Academy’s next opponent is Sheffield, the team’s second Region opponent of the season and last home game before two straight road contests.
