MADISON – Both the math team and math club from Rainbow Elementary School competed at the eighth annual Rocket City Junior Math Mania event.

Grissom High School’s math team hosted the event on Nov. 15. This daylong event included math competitions in the morning for students in grades 4-8. Younger students were welcome to participate in the fourth-grade division.

The tournament had 49 schools to compete in grades 4-8. Officials divided students by grade level but not into divisions based on school size. For the team test, students were placed into groups of four.

Coaches for the Rainbow Math Team are Sara Frederick and Bill Smoak. The Rainbow Math Club coach is Nicole Orr.

Individual awards were based solely on the results of individual testing. Individual awards were given to the top 15 scorers in each grade. For individual tests, students were allowed one hour to solve 20 to 30 short-answer questions.

Team awards are based solely on the team test, which is a collaborative team effort. Officials presented awards to the top 5 teams per grade.

Rainbow fifth-graders earning individual awards were Maanasi Limaye in tenth place and Brandon Todd in twelfth place. Rainbow fourth-grader Elaine Bao reached twelfth place.

For teams at the tournament, students were introduced to algebra and probability, along with geometry and potpourri.  The fifth-grade team from Rainbow earned second place. Members are Maanasi Limaye, Nini Nguyen, Brandon Todd and Jonah Tuttle.

Rainbow sixth-graders who also competed were Will Bao, Maddy Dobbs, Ren Ito, Brigida Lundy, Gabby Samaras, Quinlyn Scully, Jimmy Sieja, Emma Tolbert, Caitlin Tran and Sam Uchitel.
