MADISON – Registration is open for the “Breastfeeding Myths, Bottle-Feeding Mentality” conference at Bob Jones High School on March 24.

The conference will feature nationally known expert Dr. Jack Newman and run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Zompa Auditorium. Sponsors for the conference are Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at Bob Jones, Madison Hospital and Connections Breastfeeding.

Before the conference opens, Newman will be available for a book signing from 10 to 11 a.m., HOSA sponsor Melinda Lawson said. Lawson, a registered nurse, chairs the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Medical Academy at Bob Jones.

Newman will concentrate on the topic, “What They Didn’t Teach You about Breastfeeding in Your Training.” After studying in Canada, Newman has practiced medicine around the world. He founded the first hospital-based breastfeeding clinic in Canada in 1984.

Currently, he works at the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute, based at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. He is author of “The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers.”

La Leche League founded Connections Breastfeeding. Connections leaders are board-certified lactation consultants who wanted research-based breastfeeding information presented in North Alabama.

A food truck will be onsite for anyone who wants to buy lunch, Lawson said.

Bob Jones HOSA members are interested in health care careers and are active in events that promote active lifestyles. HOSA also is working on a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Lawson said.

The conference fee is $15 for healthcare professionals who want continuing education credit. Other guests will pay $10. The seminar is approved for 1.5 CERPs or Continuing Education Recognition Points, along with other credits (1.8 CEs, 1.5 CEASNAs, 1.5 SWs, 1.5 RDs, 1.5 CMEs).
