MADISON – After a recent drive to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), local realtor Jill Heffernan is aiming to continue contributing to the organization as a board member and outspoken advocate.
As a nominee of the 2015 LLS Woman of the Year, Heffernan set out to raise as much funding as possible in the 10 weeks allotted in the competition. From late March until the program’s conclusion June 4, Heffernan raised more than $15,000, earning her the Woman of the Year honors.
“It’s really my honor to be the 2015 Woman of the Year,” Heffernan said. “It’s my greatest pleasure to have raised money to help battle and help get a cure for cancer.”
The 2015 Man of the Year was Mark Ardin, co-owner of Hartlex Interiors, who raised more than $10,000. The seven candidates raised a combined $50,000 for the organization.
Shortly after the end of the campaign, Heffernan was asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Huntsville LLS chapter. The chapter has several events warranting community participation coming up, including the Light the Night Walk Oct. 29 in downtown Huntsville’s Big Spring Park.
“We are currently seeking corporate sponsorships for Light the Night Walk,” Heffernan said. “A lot of schools have gotten involved in the past. Families that would like to contribute for the walk, large companies, small individual companies are encouraged to get involved.”
Huntsville will not be alone Oct. 29, as the walk coincides with more than 200 other walks around the country to help raise money for LLS. Different tiers of corporate sponsorships are available for the event, as well as opportunities to form teams to raise money and enthusiasm for the society.
“We’re just thankful for the community and would like them to keep their involvement [in LLS],” Heffernan said.
More information about the walk, including ways to donate, can be found at lls.org.
