MADISON- Hazel Green completed the season sweep over Bob Jones Friday night with a 53-42 victory. The win moves Hazel Green to 2-2 in area play, Bob Jones falls to 0-4.

Hazel Green led from the outset as Cole Guffey sparked the Trojans in the first quarter with two three-point baskets. Hazel Green led 16-10 after one quarter. Devonte Mason came off the bench and scored 11 in the second quarter to keep Bob Jones close and the teams went to halftime with Hazel Green leading 27-25.

Mason was hot from outside and driving to the basket. He finished with 21 points.

Bob Jones at time showed good ball movement and got some easy baskets around the rim but Hazel Green’s offensive rebounding and fast break points were too much for the Patriots to overcome.

Three minutes into the third quarter it was still a one point game after Jonathan Moss had a steal and went coast-to-coast. But Hazel Green’s Kira Lewis did not let Bob Jones take the lead, hitting a three. He and Anthony Bell sparked a 6-0 run that put Hazel Green comfortably ahead 42-31 early fourth quarter. Lewis’ offensive rebound and putback gave Hazel Green their biggest lead at 47-35.

Lewis finished with 23 points and Bell with 17.

“Kira is a special talent talent but we have other guys around that can score 10 or 15. Cole Guffey has been shooting about 50% behind the arc and Anthony Bell was a monster down low tonight,” Hazel Green coach Todd Jeffers said.

Finishing first and hosting the area tournament is his team’s goal right now.

“It’s tight the way it is every year. On any night anyone of us can win,” Jeffers said.

“This is one of the toughest areas in the state. It will come down to who is playing well at the right time. It would be great to play at home because our crowd is amazing. The Trojan Nation gives us great support.”

Last year Hazel Green advanced to the Northeast Regional at Wallace State where they lost to Hoover, the eventual state 7A champion.

Bob Jones was led by Mason who nailed a three pointer for Bob Jones final points.

Bob Jones travels to James Clemens next Friday night.

In girls action Hazel Green won 47-33.
