MADISON – While some teenagers find it an offensive four-letter word, ‘math’ is fulfilling and not so difficult for Math Team members at Bob Jones High School.

“Congratulations to both the Comprehensive and Algebra II teams for taking first place in district. Comprehensive took third in state, and Algebra II took first place at the 2016 Alabama Statewide High School Math Contest,” sponsor Kimberly Cox said.

Along with sponsoring math team, Cox teaches preliminary Advanced Placement Pre-Calculus and pre-AP algebra II and trigonometry at Bob Jones.

At the district competition, Joey Li led the Comprehensive competitors by winning first place, while Aditi Limaye was next in line as second-place student. Rounding out the top five was Ada van der Zijp-Tan in the fifth-place slot.

For Algebra I sections at district, David Li also captured first place for Bob Jones. Other top competitors were Corey Tolbert in third place; Cheng Zhou, fourth; and Victoria Lee, fifth.

The University of North Alabama hosted the state meet.

At the state tournament for Comprehensive rounds, Joey Li again nabbed first place. Finishing at third place, Aditi Limaye also had a winning streak. Ada van der Zijp-Tan, Tony Tian and Anthony Zhu also placed in Comprehensive play.

In Algebra II at the state level, David Li earned a second-place finish. Corey Tolbert took the slot of fifth place, while Cheng Zhou grabbed eighth place. Victoria Lee was in ninth place, and Joshua Byers finished at 12th place.

In other competition for Madison mathematicians, the Math Team at Horizon Elementary School performed “really well” at the Randolph School competition, sponsor Paige Runnion said.

In the fight for team award, Horizon fifth-graders earned first place. Sixth-grade students completed the tourney as third-place winners.

In individual awards, Thais Arslanbekov was in first place for fifth grade and Lillian Qu took seventh place for fifth-graders.

Other Randolph winners in sixth grade were Jamie Clark, first place; Christos Prapiadis, second place; Kailyn Grant, ninth; and Lillian Zhu, tenth.
