Athlete of the Week

MADISON – Mario Magnuson’s favorite sport is soccer because he enjoys all the different aspects and skills that the game demands.

“There is athleticism but also creative problem-solving. There is teamwork but also individual moments of brilliance. It ties together a diverse skill set,” he said.

“Soccer is the only sport I play,” Magnuson said. “Goalkeeper is my main position.”

He plays varsity soccer for Bob Jones High School and with Huntsville Futbol Club. In 1998, Magnuson played for the Alabama Olympic Development Program team.

A senior at Bob Jones, he also participates in National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club and Bob Jones Ambassadors.

His parents are Roy and Suzanne Magnuson. Roy is a biology professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Suzanne Magnuson works as an analyst at The Boeing Company. Mario’s younger sister, Claire, is a sophomore at Bob Jones.

Q & A

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Pizza.

Q: What restaurants do you like?

A: “I like to eat at this Greek restaurant near my house called Gyro 21,” Mario said.

Q: What is your favorite sports team?

A: “My favorite soccer teams are Arsenal and A.C. Milan. I also support the Red Sox in baseball,” he said.

Q: What is your favorite sports memory?

A: Mario’s best memory is “winning the 2015 State Cup with Huntsville Futbol Club.”

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: In free time, he likes to play soccer and video games with friends.

Q: What are your plans after high school?

A: “I am still trying to decide between Northwestern University and Auburn University as an engineering major,” Mario said.
