HUNTSVILLE – A week after lightning brought Madison Academy’s season opener to a premature ending, resulting in a 20-16 loss at Nashville’s Ensworth with 10:23 still left on the clock in the debut of new coach Grant Reynolds, the Mustangs struck back in big fashion.

Senior quarterback Grayson Edgemon threw five touchdown passes, three to senior receiver Jaelin Ferdinand, and fast-starting Madison Academy defeated visiting Sardis 42-7 in the Class 4A, Region 7 opener for both teams.

The region victory was also the first for the Mustangs as a member of 4A. Madison Academy finished as 3A runner-up in 2011, won 3A state titles from 2012-14 and was eliminated in the third round last season.

“We had a lot of improvement,” Reynolds said. “But, we’ve got a lot to work on. We’re a work in progress.”

Edgemon completed 12 of 20 for 290 yards with no interceptions against Sardis.

The Mustangs (1-1 overall, 1-0 in the region) visit Randolph (2-0, 1-0) on Friday in a game that will give the winner the region lead.

The Raiders have started strong. Randolph, coming off its first playoff appearance last season, defeated New Hope 27-7 and Westminster Christian 41-7.

“They’re a well-coached team with a couple of good play makers,” Reynolds said. “They’ve had some success and we’re working to get prepared for them.”

Running back Levon Fletcher and quarterback Forrester Webber both had three rushing touchdowns for the Raiders last week. Fletcher had 212 yards and John Sadler Evans 170.
