MADISON- Score one for the band.

Carsen Grant, who plays trumpet in the marching band, bested a strong field of seniors and won homecoming queen at halftime of Bob Jones’ 21-16 win over Florence Friday night.

She is also vice-president of the senior class and with a 31 on the ACT has narrowed her choice of colleges down to UAB and Auburn. She says that she will be in the marching band at either university she attends.

“It’s so exciting just to be on the court with all those awesome girls,” said a surprised Grant after the halftime announcement. “They are all great girls I’m friends with all of them. Everyone on the court deserved to win, I was just happy to be on it.”

Grant marches in both the football show band and the competition band.

“It’s a lot of work but totally worth it. I love it. My parents are awesome they support and encourage me especially this week. I will go the dance and do lead out with my date John Schumacher.”

Schumacher is the drum major of the band and was also on the homecoming court. Shannon Massengale another band member was also one of the senior maids. The other senior maids were Madison Collum, Taylor Felts,Abby Hubbard, Lexi Koger, Emily Quick, and Paige Sander.

It was the first time anyone could remember a band member winning homecoming queen.

Grant is the daughter of Doug and Kelley Grant. She speaks fluent German. The family lived five years in Germany with Doug’s job.

Her father said that Carsen studies engineering and has taken just about every Advanced Placement math and engineering course offered at Bob Jones.
