MADISON – Veterans Day devotes 24 hours annually to remember military personnel. However, Veterans Week on campuses of Madison schools extended that recognition during four days leading to Veterans Day on November 11.
“Approximately one in four students in Madison City Schools (MCS) is military connected,” Public Relations Manager John Peck said. “The school district is keenly aware of the stresses that can have on families.”
On Nov. 7, West Madison Elementary School welcomed veterans with cheering, a breakfast reception, music and heartwarming remarks of thanks from students. Principal Dr. Daphne Jah sang her outstanding rendition of “God Bless The USA.”
In uniform, the JROTC Color Guard from Bob Jones High School participated in the program. MCS Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler joined the students.
On Nov. 9, Bob Jones students had a unique option during Patriot Path offerings. A teacher, whose husband served in the Marines, explained hardships that military families endure concerning travel, separation and making friends. Students made poppies and wrote letters to hospitalized veterans.
Horizon Elementary School hosted “Boots and Breakfast” on Nov. 9 for area veterans and families. A student-produced video, “Wall of Honor,” showed students individually paying tribute to local veterans.
On Nov. 10,  Liberty Middle School held its annual “My Veteran, My Hero” tribute in the gym in two assemblies. A simulcast with a strong military-connected school in Fort Hood, Texas was broadcast on a giant screen. Many Fort Hood students have parents deployed overseas.
Also on Nov. 10, Discovery Middle School held its veterans assembly in the gym to honor retired veterans and those soldiers still in active duty. The Discovery Choir and Band played patriotic music. A Discovery trumpet player performed the chilling phrases of “Taps.”
Discovery’s program included laying of the symbolic wreath, remarks by Madison Mayor Paul Finley and a heroes walk with veterans walking through lines of flag-waving, cheering students.
