MADISON – Dr. Julie Finley, wife of Madison Mayor Paul Finley, was arrested for DUI and reckless driving on Jan. 18.
Trooper Curtis Summerville with the Public Information/Education Unit of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency released the following statement on Jan. 19:
“On Jan. 18 at approximately 4:30 p.m., an Alabama State Trooper stopped a 2013 Honda Accord for speeding (103 mph in a 65 mph zone) on Interstate 565 near the 19 mile marker. After further investigation, the driver, Julie Finley of Madison, was subsequently arrested for DUI and transported to the Madison County jail. Finley was also issued a citation for reckless driving. Nothing further is available for release.”
Julie Finley, 50, was booked into Madison County Metro Jail at 6:14 p.m. on Jan 18. She was released on $1,000 bond at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 19, according to jail records.
Mayor Paul Finley released an open letter on Jan. 19 at 9:20 a.m.:
“Today, I come to each of you in an open letter as a humble husband, father and mayor. Last evening my family experienced a very serious situation in which my wife was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.”
“I feel it appropriate that you, our extended family, hear it directly from me. In these days ahead, we will seek healing and understanding and do not even attempt to hide or down play the seriousness of what has occurred.”
“I thank each of you for your prayers for our family as we together seek council and restored health in the days ahead. Respectfully, Mayor Paul Finley.”
In addition, Paul Finley released a follow-up statement around noon on Jan. 19:
“Due to the nature of last night’s incident, the Finley family has retained the legal services of McDaniel and McDaniel. Going forward, all questions should be directed to Mark McDaniel at (256) 534-3018. Our family is greatly appreciative of the outpouring of support we have already received from so many. Sincerely, Mayor Paul Finley.”
Julie Finley formerly worked as an assistant principal at Bob Jones High School and as Vice President of Educational Initiatives at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Recently, she has assisted with education initiatives for the Kids to Love Foundation. The Finleys own Paul Finley Consulting firm.
