Bob Jones and Discovery kick off football season with Showcase

MADISON-  Football season is upon us. It is officially game week. Bob Jones, ranked #8 in 7A, will bus down to Auburn for a brief layover on Friday before going on to Phenix City to play #2 ranked in 7A Central High School.

“It should be a great football game,” Bob Jones head coach Kevin Rose said Friday night after putting his squad through a scrimmage. “I’ve never been to Phenix City so I’m excited about going. I just hope our guys go and compete well. We are glad to be recognized in the top ten.”

According to Rose, Caden Rose will start at quarterback and Dylan Ray will play slot receiver then move to quarterback for some series.

“Both quarterbacks played well tonight and we will use them both in the game and all year.”

Other players who stood out in the scrimmage was #24 Kameraon Kaba-Williams on offense and #5 Khalil Griffin on defense.

“We got a lot of good work in tonight,” Rose said. “We had about 150 kids on the field. We ran three teams through and everybody got to play. We still got to clean some things up next week. To have a chance to win against Central we can’t turn the ball over.”

One thing fans will see that they have not seen in recent years is the quarterback running the football. Both are fast and run the zone read play.

“We will do more of that than we have in the past. Both guys are athletic. When you have a dual threat it makes the offense better because the backside can’t chase running backs down. They have to honor the quarterback which creates bigger running lanes,” Rose said.

Bob Jones also worked on special teams. Dylan Ray looked impressive as long snapper. John Michael Riley is solid as punter. James Williard took some reps at punter and hit some nice punts.

Kicker will come down to Carl Hasanot, Jacob Fruenwald, and Williard.

Fruenwald is the only kicker returning from last year. He attempted one field goal and made it against Grissom.

Bob Jones opens the home season on Sept. 1 against Austin and a week later hosts James Clemens in the Madison Bowl. Capacity crowds are expected for both those games.

Permanent team captains were elected this week and are Gavin Lewis, Kade Koler, Jalen Williams, Caleb Lawson, and Kyle Parker.
