Liz Hurley Ribbon Run: October 21
HUNTSVILLE- With a course that features a trek through beautiful downtown Huntsville, including the Twickenham and Old Town Historic Districts, the annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21 beginning at 8:00 a.m. The 5K run will also feature a Survivors’ Walk and opportunities to purchase luminaries. All proceeds from the annual event go directly to the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
A breast cancer survivor herself, Hurley, longtime news anchor on WAFF-Channel 48, will be the hostess for the event she first started in 2004. After publicly going through the fight against an aggressive form of breast cancer first diagnosed in 1998, Hurley established her Foundation and quickly became a local spokesperson for survivors of cancer and the fight against the disease.
The 5K run will begin at the intersection of Lowe Avenue and Adams Street, circle through some of the oldest sections of Huntsville before crossing the finish line in front of Huntsville Middle School on Adams Street. Awards will be given out at 9:30 a.m. with the Survivors’ Walk held directly after at 10:00 a.m. Current registration is $30 with late registration rate of $40 occurring Oct. 14. There is no minimum age required to participate, but those age 12 of under must be accompanied by an adult. The race can be run individually and/or on a team.
Those wishing to use strollers and/or baby joggers will be put at the rear at the start of the race for the safety of all participants. Pets, skateboards and bicycles are not permitted.
Hurley’s dedication to the promotion of breast cancer awareness for the American Cancer Society is second to none in North Alabama. She never shied away from her diagnosis of breast cancer and used her work in local television news to bring to the forefront what the fight against the disease was really like.
