Madison City Community Orchestra plans 2018 season

MADISON – Madison City Community Orchestra will soon begin its third season of entertaining audiences with music ranging from contemporary charts to classical music.

MCCO’s Spring Classical Series will open the 2018 season on May 11 at 7 p.m. in James Clemens High School Auditorium. The program includes the first, second and fourth movements from “Dvorak’s Symphony, No. 9 in E minor,” “From the New World”, Op. 95, B. 178 or more commonly known as “The New World Symphony.”

“It is believed to be Dvorak’s most popular works. Neil Armstrong took a recording of ‘New World Symphony’ to the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, the first moon landing, in 1969,” MCCO Director Sandy Weisner said.

MCCO’s Summer Series, “Conductor’s Showcase,” will feature various pieces that Weisner has selected and will conduct along with two assistant conductors, Allison Edgecomb and Hobbs Hundley. The program will include a tribute to the United States with patriotic pieces.

As a special treat for the “Conductor’s Showcase,” the Madison City Youth Orchestra, led by William and Rebecca Wortham, will also perform at the concert.

For the Fall Pops series, the “Heroes” concert will portray Spiderman and Superman in musical interpretations. In addition, “a surprise hero will appear, as well as a tribute to the 40 years of the wonderful music of ‘Star Wars,'” Weisner said.

“The Winter Holiday Series will be titled, ‘The Christmas Story.’ MCCO will tell the Nativity story and will be joined by choirs and Chancel Bell Choir of Madison United Methodist Church,” Weisner said. The winter concert will be presented on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

MCCO Board of Directors members are President Robert Prince, Vice President Nancy Perry, Secretary Jessica Hunt, Treasurer Natalie Frazier, General Manager Aprell Robinson, Librarian Sue Kula, Fundraising Coordinator Jan Mason, Webmaster Danielle Bryant and Youth Representatives Susanna Edgecomb and Catherine Irrgang.

MCCO, a 501(C)3 organization, accepts new players with four years’ of experience. The orchestra currently needs players for all string parts and percussion.
