Botanical garden to host Spring Plant Sale

HUNTSVILLE – A certain sign that the spring season has arrived is the 31st annual Spring Plant Sale. Huntsville Botanical Garden and The Garden Guild present the sale.

“Gardening from the Heart” is the 2018 theme. The plant sale traditionally provides a wide variety of top quality plants for small or large gardens, along with patio planters or hanging containers.

“There will be tried-and-true plants, along with new and exciting new varieties,” Elaine Alspach said. Alspach serves as Garden Guild Publicity Chair.

Admission is free to the plant sale, which is open to the public on April 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and April 15 from noon to 5 p.m. The sale is reserved for members of Huntsville Botanical Garden on April 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Greeters will help shoppers find their favorite annuals and perennials, houseplants, heirlooms and ‘pass-alongs,’ pollinator plants, geraniums, hanging baskets, vegetables, wildflowers, herbs, ferns, roses, standard and native azaleas, trees and shrubs,” Alspach said.

Master Gardeners and plant professionals will be available to provide soil testing, answer questions and provide advice.

“Plants will be loaded into your car. Shoppers are encouraged to bring a wagon; some will be available on a first-come, first-served basis,” Alspach said.

Food and refreshments will be sold. Specialty vendors and other displays will be set up for visitors to browse.

Sponsors are Champion Windows and Redstone Federal Credit Union.

In another garden event, a Children’s Education program, “Beautiful Butterflies,” will be held on April 13 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the garden’s Anderson Education Classroom.

Intended for two- through five-year-olds, this parent-and-child class offers exciting stories for the season, crafts, learning activities and walks (weather permitting) in the garden. Held on Fridays, each class offers a different adventure for the child to experience nature.

The “Beautiful Butterflies” class fee is $8 for the first child, $5 for each additional sibling. Adults can attend free with membership or garden admission. To register, call 256-830-4447, ext. 253. For information, email mhertzig@hsvbg.org.

Huntsville Botanical Garden’s address is 4747 Bob Wallace Ave. For more information, visit hsvbg.org.
