Two new traffic signals now operational on Hughes Road

MADISON — The City of Madison announced today that traffic lights at two new locations are now fully operational.

The lights are located at two intersections on Hughes Road: one at Plaza Boulevard and another at the entrance of the Bradford Farms subdivision toward the north end of Hughes Road.

The City of Madison is asking drivers to be aware of the new traffic pattern and drive with caution as everyone becomes accustomed to the change. The City of Madison also said they will be observing traffic to determine the best timing and method of operations for the lights to maintain good traffic movement.

Gary Chynoweth, director of engineering for the City of Madison, is overseeing the installation of all new traffic lights.

At the Oct. 8 city council meeting, Madison Mayor Paul Finley said the Plaza and Bradford Farms lights were on flash mode and would be operational first, and the other two new traffic lights would follow suit soon after.

The other two new traffic lights are located at the Hughes Road and Gooch Lane intersection and the County Line Road and Hardiman Road intersection.

Finley also said at the meeting that the City of Madison was aiming to have all four lights functional within the next two weeks.

The implementation of the new lights aims to improve traffic and make the affected areas safer for pedestrians. Discovery Middle School students living in the Bradford Farms subdivision will now have a crosswalk to assist them in their walk to and from school, and the new light at Gooch Lane will work to decrease automobile accidents at the intersection. The lights will also aim to decrease wait time for drivers making left turns onto Hughes Road.

New traffic signals are also planned for intersections that will be affected by the upcoming widening of Sullivan Street up to Kyser Boulevard.

Anyone who observes a problem with these new lights should notify the Department of Engineering at engineering@madisonal.gov.
