MA’s Chelsea McGuff Signs Softball Scholarship

MADISON- Madison Academy senior Chelsea McGuff has been interested in criminal justice and forensic science since sixth grade after watching numerous TV programs around the subjects. Her interest in the honorable career led her to signing an athletic scholarship to play softball for Georgia Southwestern State University where she plans to earn a degree in criminal justice while playing the sport she fell in love with at age six.

“My mother asked me if I wanted to try softball as I was also into cheerleading at that point,” said McGuff, who signed her scholarship offer at a recent ceremony at Madison Academy. “I dropped cheer a couple years later and soon knew softball was my passion.”

The daughter of Ben and Angie Lewis who has a 3.5 grade point average was recruited to play catcher for the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern a NCAA Div. II program that plays in the Peach Belt Conference and is located in Americus, Ga. located just north of nearby Albany.

McGuff also plays outfield for the Lady Mustangs. As a junior last season she batted .517 with 57 hits, including five triples, four homeruns with 40 RBIs in 39 games. For her outstanding play the 5-foot-4, 128-pound athlete was selected Honorable Mention All-State for Class 4A.

“I remember the year I played on the 13-Under Mayhem and we won the State Championship as I hit a homerun and did very well overall in the tournament,” said McGuff. “That’s the one moment I remember that I knew I was pretty good at the sport.”

Urged to play softball by her mother, McGuff said her mother was always there for her at each practice and every game, especially the many trips during travel softball. McGuff attended several softball camps in efforts to enrich her skills. Several of the camps she attended were located at Southern Mississippi where she hopes to complete her education after her stay at Georgia Southwestern.

“My mother has been my everything when it comes to leadership and my playing softball,” said McGuff. “I also have a strong Christian faith and is a huge part of my life. I have received lots of help from members of my church, the Movement Church of Madison.”
