Rep. Mo Brooks says he is not running for Senate

DECATUR – U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Huntsville, said this afternoon he is not interested in running for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Doug Jones, D-Birmingham.

“It would take a seismic event to get me into the (2020) race,” said Brooks, who has held his House seat since 2010. “As of today, I am running for re-election to the House of Representatives. And I don’t know of any seismic event that is about to occur that will change my mind.”

Brooks commented on the Senate race after speaking to the Decatur Kiwanis Club at Decatur Country Club.

He said he would not endorse any candidate in the Republican primary next year.

Jones has declared his intention to run for re-election.

On the GOP side, Rep. Bradley Byrne, 1st Congressional District representative, and Tommy Tuberville, former Auburn football coach, have entered the race.

A recent Mason-Dixon poll showed former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore as the frontrunner at 27% and Brooks second at 18% in the GOP primary if the election was today.
