16th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run to be held Saturday

The 16th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run is this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Huntsville Junior High School, benefiting not-for-profit Madison Hospital Breast Center. There will be plenty of places for people to cheer on the runners as they race long the route in downtown Huntsville.

MADISON – Thousands of runners will take an active role and a symbolic step for a cancer cure in the 16th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5K and Survivors’ Walk.

The 16th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run is this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Huntsville Junior High School, benefiting not-for-profit Madison Hospital Breast Center. This event will feature a sold-out crowd of 6,500 runners from across North Alabama.

The event will kick off with the Survivors’ Walk at 8 a.m., which will have almost a “walk of champions” feel as thousands of 5K runners and walkers cheer on more than 350 breast cancer survivors. The 5K race will then start at 8:30 a.m.

Hurley, a news anchor with WAFF 48, established the fund in 1999, following her own personal fight against breast cancer.

The annual race is North Alabama’s largest 5K. Proceeds will help to provide the latest in 21st-century diagnostic technology for the not-for-profit Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital Breast Centers.

This year’s proceeds specifically will allow Huntsville Hospital Foundation to purchase a new 3D tomosynthesis mammography machine for Madison Hospital Breast Center. This equipment will make breast cancer easier to detect, particularly in dense breast tissue.

The fund’s generous supporters have allowed fundraising for almost $5.4 million. This money has not only equipped the breast center with diagnostic technology but also supported awareness programs for breast cancer.

“Diagnostic equipment bought with proceeds from past runs was used to detect my breast cancer, thus saving my life,” Marijane Jerauld, 2019 Ribbon Run co-chairperson, said. “Every dollar raised stays local, helping countless women in our community and region. When you register for this race, you are helping us toward the goal of making every breast cancer patient a survivor.”
