Madison schools plan events over the next few days to honor veterans

MADISON – Veterans observances are happening throughout Madison City Schools this week in observance of Veterans Day.

Schools are hosting a variety of activities both in classrooms and open to veterans and their families.

West Madison Elementary is hosting a Heroes Assembly on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The event will be in the gym starting at 8 a.m., followed by a breakfast in the library. Veterans are welcomed.

Horizon Elementary invites any veteran to come have lunch with their student on Nov. 7 during their regularly scheduled lunch time.

Discovery and Liberty middle schools are holding Veterans Assemblies on Friday, Nov. 8. Attendees to the DMS event can choose between an 8:30 and 9:45 program, with a breakfast in-between.Two programs are also scheduled at LMS: 8:25 or 9:30.

Madison Elementary is holding a breakfast for veterans on Nov. 8, from 7:30 – 8:15.

Rainbow Elementary Student-to-Student ambassadors are making bags for veterans and delivering them to the Veterans Home and to play bingo and games with them.

Columbia and Heritage invite veterans to have lunch with their student on Nov. 13.

Mill Creek Elementary will have a veterans program during its PTA meeting on Nov. 18. Students will give a history of Veterans Day, along with a history of each branch during which time each service member of that branch will stand and be recognized.

Both high schools are also honoring veterans in various ways this week. Bob Jones is holding a military night Nov. 7 at its basketball game against Grissom with reduced admission for veterans with an ID.
