Child killed in accidental shooting

HARVEST – The Madison Sheriff’s Office investigated a tragic accident over the weekend involving a child.

According to authorities, sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 100 block of Berrycreek Drive in Harvest on Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m. Officials said the call was for an accidental shooting of a five-year-old child.

“Upon arrival, deputies located a victim with what appeared to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” read a statement from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. “HEMSI personnel were on the scene and attempted life saving measures to no avail. The victim was transported by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital (Madison Location) where he was pronounced dead by an attending physician.”

Officials said the gunshot was self-inflicted and occurred inside an unoccupied family vehicle that was parked in the driveway. The child was located by a parent.

The investigation is on-going; however, no charges are expected.

“This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” Sheriff Kevin Turner said.
