Churches take on food distribution effort to local students

MADISON – It has been a busy week and a half for Madison City Schools employees and volunteers providing food assistance for families impacted by the COVID-19 coronavirus shutdowns.

Madison City Schools spokesperson John Peck said the Child Nutrition Program in Madison City Schools handed out approximately 3,000 grab-n-go meals at schools last week. This was in addition to food distribution sites for families at local churches and in Triana.

“Our schools will temporarily end food service after today to replenish resources that we have given out,” Peck said on Friday. “We plan to resume the grab-n-gos as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, area churches will continue providing food assistance on the rotating schedule that’s been in place since the school closure. The city schools will continue to collaborate with the area churches during this time.

Below are the locations and times of food distributions throughout the week:

Mondays: First Baptist Church 4257 Sullivan Street, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tuesdays: Asbury Church, 980 Hughes Road, Madison, 5-7 p.m. (Use Gillespie Road entrance).

Wednesdays: Trinity Baptist, 1088 Hughes Road, Madison, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Also, CrossPointe Church and Inside-Out-Ministries will be in Triana at the Triana Town Municipal Building, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursdays: Asbury Church, 980 Hughes Road, Madison, 5-7 p.m. (Use Gillespie Road entrance).

Fridays: Heritage Church, 29768 Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road, Madison, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Peck also stated that if there are special circumstances preventing anyone from picking up at one of these locations, please email the MCS social worker, Briana Hawkins, at bbhawkins@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
