MCS starts delivering meals to families using school buses

MADISON – Students in Madison City schools head back to school tomorrow through the start of online classes.

With the start of school this week, Madison City Schools and its community partners are staying busy with food assistance to Madison area students and families. Nearly 1,400 meals were picked up or delivered via school buses on Tuesday.

MCS officials said Bob Jones High School CNP workers teamed up with Discovery Middle CNP workers to prepare 574 grab-n-go meals that were handed out today in a car line at DMS.

CNP workers from Liberty Middle, Madison Elementary and James Clemens High School prepared 824 meals that were delivered into some neighborhoods by buses.

Area churches and volunteers are continuing their food distribution sites this week to help families with food.

Deliveries will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on most routes. Residents are advised to start looking for the buses around 11.

In addition to the Tuesday and Thursday bus route deliveries, Discovery Middle will serve as a pickup site every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

CNP workers for Madison City Schools will prepare seven packaged breakfasts, seven packaged lunches and seven snacks for each student to cover each day of the week. Pickup is on Tuesdays only, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Discovery Middle Schools, 1304 Hughes Road in Madison.

Several churches have severed as distribution points for food pickup over the past several days.

“Madison City Schools appreciates the assistance of churches for family food distributions,” said MCS spokeperson John Peck. “This service has been invaluable providing food help early into the national emergency and when Madison City Schools suspended food assistance all last week.”

“We are so grateful to our community partners who have committed to providing meals during the school closure,” MCS interim superintendent Eric Terrell said. “We are also proud of our CNP employees who have prepared, served, and in some cases, delivered, thousands of meals for students.”

The community based food assistance will end April 10, while the school based help continues.
