James Clemens/Liberty Jr. High Track Champs

MADISON- For the fifth time in its eight years of existence, the James Clemens Jr. High track team has won the North Alabama Jr. High Track Championships winning both the boys and girls divisions.

“The boys squad continued to show why they are one of the top teams in the nation as they tripled and almost quadrupled the second place team’s score,” said Drew Bell, head coach of the James Clemens track program, which includes the student-athletes in seventh through ninth grades from Liberty Middle School. “Our squad went undefeated this season while beating 75 teams.”

The final team scores in boys were 1. James Clemens 191, 2. Bob Jones 49, 3. Madison Academy 45, and 13. Sparkman 6. In girls, the scores were 1. James Clemens 114, 3. Bob Jones 50, and 11. Sparkman 19.

Overall at the North Alabama Championships, James Clemens won 29 medals including 13 gold, nine silver and seven bronze. The boys were led by Dylan Dryer, who claimed three gold medals winning both the 800 and 1600-meter races and anchored the winning 4×400 relay. Dryer is currently ranked the No. 2 distance runner in America. The Jets also swept the top three medal spots in both the long jump and hurdles.

In girls, Kayla Willett won gold medals in both the 800 and 1600-meter races and Jazmin Grigsby took gold in the shot put and a silver in the discus.
