New exhibit ‘Uncaged’ opens today at Huntsville Botanical Garden

HUNTSVILLE – A new exhibit opens today at the Huntsville Botanical Garden called “Uncaged: Birds, Nature, and You.” The all-ages outdoor experience features a collection of seven interactive structures built by local artists and architects, all about birds and the environment.

“Birds, plants and people are all interconnected, and this exhibit explores that connection in a new and creative way,” said Sue Wagner, chief executive officer of the Garden. “Uncaged not only provides guests with a unique and inventive experience, but it also invites them to consider how they can play a role in their own environment, all while they enjoy and discover these playful, one-of-a-kind pieces.”

The seven structures are spread throughout the Garden, creating a scavenger hunt for guests who want to find them all. Some structures are oversized versions of familiar objects, such as a large birdhouse or giant nest, while others are more conceptual, such as an airy space that encourages guests to imagine they are flying. Each piece is accompanied by a guide that reveals how that structure represents an aspect of a bird’s lifecycle or behavior.

Four teams of local artists and architects partnered with the Garden to bring the exhibit to life by designing and building the structures. Artists include Chris Boyd Taylor Studios, Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, Matheny Goldmon Architecture + Interiors, and Pamela Keller and Cypress Creek Designs.

“It was a privilege to work with these talented artists, and we are thrilled to finally be sharing their creations with our community,” said Rebecca Turk, director of learning and public engagement at the Garden. “Whether you are a dedicated birder, an art enthusiast or a nature lover, this exhibit has something for you. It is sure to delight guests of all ages.”

Uncaged is open now and continues through Oct. 31. The exhibit is included with regular daytime Garden admission and is free for Garden members. For more information, visit hsvbg.org/uncaged.
