Toney man identified as deceased man found floating in Tennessee River

MORGAN COUNTY – A Toney man was identified as the deceased man found floating in the Tennessee River near Valhermoso Springs in Morgan County on Monday, according to authorities.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn identified Bruce Mitchum Parker, 56, as the deceased man found by a kayaker, according to a text from the Morgan Sheriff’s Office.

An autopsy is pending, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Chunn said yesterday the deceased man had no identification. “He was wearing street clothes,” Chunn said.

He said Morgan County 911 received a call at 10:55 a.m.

Chunn said it might be “a few days” before the forensics office provides a preliminary report and possible cause of death.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Mike Swafford said a kayaker called 911 to report a body floating in the river about 300 yards northeast of Johnson Landing.

“We’re not sure if the subject died from drowning or from injuries,” Swafford said. “We’re not sure how long the body was in the water. It’s an active death investigation.”
