Master Gardeners promise good buys, quality at Fall Plant Sale

MADISON COUNTY – The helpful gardening adage, “Fall is for planting,” applies as Master Gardeners of North Alabama present their annual Fall Plant Sale on Sept. 25.

The sale venue at Madison County Farmers Market on 1022 Cook Ave. in Huntsville will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Numerous Master Gardener experts will be available throughout the day to answer questions about gardening procedures, lawn growth and soil amendments.

“We are focusing our efforts on native plants, trees and shrubs, spring-blooming bulbs and perennials, along with plants that bloom well through our fall season,” Interim Publicity Chair Meredith Kilby said.

Master Gardeners also will sell some seeds and offer free testing of soil pH (remember to bring a soil sample from home). The “Ask a Master Gardener” feature allows a homeowner or apartment planter to learn solutions to many problems with growing plants and solutions for plant pests.

“Don’t miss the garden-themed rummage sale,” Kilby said. “We will have lots of containers, books, tools, birdhouses and more! We’ll also have Radius gardening tools and Master Gardener ‘merch’ for sale.”

“As always, our prices will be lower than market, so you can fill up your gardens and yards at thrift-shop prices,” Kilby said. “Come one and all! Let us help you plan a new landscape or enhance the one you have.”

One species for sale, the beautyberry bush grows in a cascading or weeping effect and sports showy clusters of purple or white berries in late summer and fall. Passion Flower Vine produces magnificent, multi-colored blooms all summer and until frost.

Day lilies and canna lilies in several hues, along with Crinum lilies, will be sold. Easy-to-grow ground covers are a colorful, intersting alternative to grass. Bulbs, which gardeners should plant in fall, are the first sign when spring is about to arrive.

Master Gardeners of North Alabama Inc. have supported the Alabama Cooperative Extension System since 1998. The group is a fully qualified 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
