American Legion, JROTC to hold yard sale at Bob Jones

MADISON – Members of American Legion, Post 229 and Air Force Junior ROTC are partnering for a Community Yard Sale to help in funding veterans’ programs and JROTC cadet activities.

A first-time cooperative venture, this yard sale at Bob Jones High School will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Shoppers can follow signs to the north parking lot for the sale.

Vendor spots will be open to Post 229 members and their families, along with relatives of Bob Jones JROTC. Reservation fee for a vendor space is $10.

Organizers welcome donations from the public. “We are accepting sellable items you may want to donate,” Jean Downs, 1st Vice Commander of Post 229, said.

Residents can bring donations on-site from 7 to 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 25 or contact a coordinator for other arrangements — Larry Vannoy with Post 229, 256-258-8534, commander@americanlegionpost229.org or Dr. Maj. Melissa M. Lacey with Bob Jones JROTC, 256-425-6154 after 4:30 p.m.

Organizers will provide tax donation receipts.

“We see the yard sale as a win-win for our post members, JROTC family members and the community,” Post 229 Commander Larry Vannoy said. “The sale provides a safe space to sell items that are no longer wanted and helps raise funds for two very important local causes.”

“Community members are welcome to donate usable, clean items that will be sold during the event knowing that their donation will benefit two outstanding organizations that serve both the future and past of our nation’s service men and women,” Downs said.

Post and JROTC members will sell donated items and share the proceeds between the two organizations. Post 229 will use sale proceeds and vendor entry fees to continue to provide veterans and youth programs across the community.

“Post 229 has had very good relationships with both of our city’s high school JROTC units over the years, and this year we thought we would try to work together on a joint project to raise funds to benefit both organizations,” Vannoy said.

“Both Bob Jones and James Clemens JROTC units are very engaged in Post 229 programs throughout the year, including flag ceremonies and laying of flags and wreaths at veterans’ graves throughout the year,” Downs said.

Retired Chief Master Sergeant Ellis Clark, who is an Air Force JROTC instructor at Bob Jones and member of Post 229, said that proceeds “will go toward a myriad of cadet activities that require both equipment and transportation expenses. Some of those activities include the Cyber Patriot, Drill Team, Honor Guard and the Saber, Archery, Marksmanship and Orienteering teams.”

For more information, contact Vannoy or Lacey.
