Jets bring patriotic show to nation’s capital

MADISON – The James Clemens High School marching band is heading to Washington, DC for a patriotic performance at the Lincoln Memorial.

Nearly 150 musicians, color guard and dance team members will perform Friday, April 29, at 10 a.m. on the steps of the memorial. The show will include the National Anthem, the Armed Forces Salute medley, and a variety of other numbers. Following the performance, the band will be gifted the American flag that flies over the U.S. Capitol that day.

The students, along with instructors and support personnel, will also visit Arlington National Cemetery, national museums, and other local landmarks. The trip culminates with a visit to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.

Band director Keith Anderson says the trip showcases the students’ musical talents, offers educational experiences, and celebrates the band’s hard work throughout marching, competition, and concert season.

“Our students have been remarkably resilient these last couple of years in particular, and we’re grateful to the administration and our school leadership that we’re able to take a trip like this. At the beginning of the school year, we had no idea if it was possible, but they allowed us to make a plan. Now, that plan is paying off,” said Anderson.

It’s been a busy year for the James Clemens band. In fall, the directors put two different shows on the football field and the band competed in multiple competitions. This spring, the directors are working with five different musical ensembles: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band 1, Symphonic Band 2, and the Jets Blues Jazz Band, along with varsity and junior varsity winter color guards.

“Band kids are the best kids,” Anderson added. “We’re looking forward to a great experience in Washington.”
