Madison councilman announces campaign for Alabama House District 10

MADISON – Madison councilman, Teddy Powell, has announced he will be seeking the Republican nomination in the Alabama House District 10 special election, set for Dec. 12.

The seat was formerly held by Rep. David Cole, who resigned on Aug. 30. Cole signed a plea agreement stating he knowingly voted at a polling location where he was unauthorized to vote. House District 10 represents a portion of Madison County.

According to press release from Powell’s campaign, Powell cited his passion for service, dedication to his community, and his hope to bring the successes of the city of Madison to the State House as his primary reason for running. It stated Powell is a lifelong Republican, and longtime resident of Madison.

“The people of Madison deserve to have their voices heard in Montgomery by a person who they know, respect, and trust. For the past six years I’ve enjoyed focusing on economic development here in Madison that brings jobs and opportunities, investing in our schools and education systems, as well as working to enhance the quality and safety of our infrastructure locally,” Powell stated, going on to say, “I’m running for House District 10 with the encouragement of my family, many local friends and neighbors. I hope to focus on taking the successes we’ve seen in Madison to Montgomery to increase the quality of life around Alabama for everyone that lives in or visits our state.”

Powell has served as a budget analyst for the Department of Defense for many years, recently retiring from that position. He represents Madison’s third district on the city council.

“I’m proud to call Madison my home. I’m honored to serve on the council, and I am excited about the opportunity to serve the people of my home as their voice in Montgomery. I look forward to meeting the voters in District 10, listening to their concerns, and earning their vote. I’ve always enjoyed working hard and this campaign will be no different; I plan to work hard, share my ideas, and run a strong campaign.” remarked Powell.

Democrat Marilyn Lands also announced her candidacy today on the steps of the Madison County Courthouse. Libertarian Elijah Boyd has announced his running for the position as well.
