‘Shoot for Shelter’ clay shoot to benefit rescue mission

MADISON – The eighth annual “Shoot for Shelter” tournament will open at 7 a.m. on Oct. 20 at Old South Clays, 27246 Wooley Springs Road in Athens.

The event is a fundraiser for Downtown Rescue Mission in Huntsville.

Shoot For Shelter will be an exciting day of shotguns and sporting clays, DRM Events Coordinator Jenn Maturano said. “The money raised from our events helps us provide emergency services for men, women and children at no charge.”

The fundraising goal for Shoot for Shelter is $20,000; as of Oct. 6, the event had collected $4,400.

All tourney participants will receive a goody bag and complimentary breakfast, lunch or both meals. Organizers will give all teams their scorecards at check-in before their session, along with a golf cart for four people, at no additional charge. Contact Maturano by Oct.16 if your team will bring a golf cart or plans to walk the course.

“We will have foam ear protection, safety glasses and pens for your convenience,” Maturano said.

To register for the tournament, visit downtownrescuemission.org, and click the “Get Involved” menu and then click “Events.” In the “Shoot for Shelter” section, click “Register Today,” and complete the form.

“Downtown Rescue Mission could not do what it does without the generous support of our community,” Maturano said. “Thank you for your support!”

In other activities, Downtown Rescue Mission staff invites the public to its annual Fall Festival and Trunk Or Treat on Oct. 27. The event, outside on the mission’s grounds, will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

The mission’s address is 1400 Evangel Drive in Huntsville.

“The festival will offer lots of fun, candy, snacks, popcorn, a bounce castle, face painting, a petting zoo and exciting door prizes,” Maturano said. “We give a great big thank-you to Chick-fil- A on University Drive, Maple Street Biscuit Company in Clift Farm, Coca-Cola and our many community partners.”

“We also have a special treat this year. The Huntsville Drumline will be with us for an interactive performance between 6:15 and 6:45 p.m.,” Maturano said. Rivertree Church is their sponsor.

“The best part of the festival is . . . it’s all free! This is our way of saying, ‘Thank you,’ to the community that does so much for us,” Maturano said. “So come and have a blast at this year’s Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat.”

Proceeds from the mission’s fundraising events help to provide emergency services for men, women and children at no charge.

Whitesburg Baptist Church is sponsoring the Fall Festival.

For displaced individuals, Downtown Rescue Mission provides three warm meals daily, safe overnight shelter, laundry services, hygiene/shower services, temporary baggage storage and the opportunity to join the 12-month, Bible-based recovery program.

To see ways that cash donations help in-need individuals, call Maturano at 256-713-4343, email events@downtownrescuemission.org or visit downtownrescuemission.org.
