Teenagers can apply for botanical garden’s Youth Volunteer Program
MADISON – By applying for a volunteer program, teenagers can contribute to an outstanding, local asset while gaining real-world experience in multiple disciplines.
Huntsville Botanical Garden is accepting 2024 applications for its Youth Volunteer Program that engages teenagers in hands-on outdoor work on the grounds during the summertime.
Under mentorship of STEM professionals, the youth can compile knowledge in horticulture, environmental education and plant conservation. The work allows the teens to explore careers in the green sector while supporting the garden in a meaningful way.
Youth will complete training sessions during May and then work 30 hours minimum from June 1 to July 31. All volunteer work occurs onsite at the garden. The youth must attend at least two presentations for Green Sector careers. In July, the youth who have completed requirements will receive certificates at a recognition event.
Working directly with members of the garden staff, youth volunteers gain on-the-job know-how:
* Plant science — Assist in ground maintenance with planting, mulching, weeding and watering. Work in the greenhouse by planting, repotting, propagating and watering. Learn about and help in removing invasive species.
* Environmental education – Support summer science camp. Gather references and brainstorm for educational materials.
* Plant conservation – Become familiar with plant documentation and help record plant data. Assist in research projects for plant conservation.
This opportunity is open to youth who are 13 to 18 years old who want to spend time outdoors, learn about new subjects and improve their environment.
Application deadline is Feb 23. On April 26, applicants will receive selection decisions by email.
A few prerequisites are associated with the Youth Volunteer Program. Applicants must submit a completed application form. They must compose an essay that demonstrates the reasons for their interest in volunteering at the garden (500 words maximum). The applicants must provide a reference letter from an adult (other than parent or guardian).
