Fourth-, fifth-graders can register for Bob Jones Science Academy

MADISON – An educational and upbeat opportunity for elementary students in two grades is open for registration for the upcoming school year.

The 2024-2025 Bob Jones High School Science Academy is preparing again for challenges and learning opportunities that incorporate fun in the process. This student-led program by dedicated high-school students gives a venue to elementary students in Madison City Schools entering grades 4-5.

The academy, an exciting in-person program, has about 15 lessons of science material. Enthusiastic high-school students will teach the lessons. Most sessions feature a game, an activity or experiment. Twice each month, participants will meet after school on Fridays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Bob Jones. Students accepted into the academy will receive a calendar with dates.

The main subject areas are chemistry, biology/human biology, environmental science and physics. Lessons include review games, activities and experiments. Students earn tickets (for prizes) by answering practice questions, winning review games and completing homework.

Participating in the Bob Jones Science Challenge, Science Academy or both will excite students about the subject while also preparing them to successfully compete in science competitions at middle- and high-school levels. These great opportunities are excellent for a child to learn about science outside of school and develop an interest in STEM careers.

Science Academy emphasizes the introduction of careers in STEM and healthcare to students. The staff believes in the importance for students to have exposure to diverse careers and fields in STEM. The academy covers STEM careers ranging from electrical engineers to molecular lab specialists. A student is sure to find a subject that they will like.

Historically, Bob Jones students perform well in science competitions and want to give back to the community by providing these opportunities to all MCS students with the Science Challenge and Science Academy.

When completing an application, students should take care and be honest with answers. Organizers want to confirm that all students receive an equal opportunity to participate.

Academy dues for the year are $25 to cover cost of materials. However, scholarships are available for students in need. For academy lessons, accepted students should bring a composition notebook and pencil.

Deadline for applications from all students is Aug. 2. For more information, email bjhsscienceacademy@gmail.com, or visit sites.google.com/view/bjhsscience.

Organizers are guaranteeing admission to first- through third-place winners and honorable mentions in the Bob Jones Science Challenge. To register, visit forms.gle/R7abzQhTegt8NtCs7.

All other MCS students who will enter grades 4-5 are eligible to participate. For regular registration, visit forms.gle/8tAWpR7bswEmB1pC6.
