‘Firefighter of the Year’ Ryan Ledford thrives in high-pressure demands

MADISON – As a firefighter, Ryan Ledford believes his work isn’t just about putting out fires. The profession involves saving lives, protecting homes and being available for your community when they need you most. Ledford has been named “Firefighter of the Year” with Madison Fire and Rescue Department.

“I’ve always been drawn to the firefighting profession (with) the perfect mix of excitement, challenge and purpose. Growing up in a family of firefighters, I was exposed to the unique lifestyle and values of the fire service from an early age,” Ledford said.

His father’s career in fire service spanned 35-plus years. Ledford was surrounded by his father’s stories, wisdom and experiences. “Seeing my father’s dedication, sacrifice and respect he earned made me proud and instilled a deep respect for the profession.”

“It’s not just carrying on a family tradition. It’s about continuing the work my father did with passion, pride and serving the community,” Ledford said.

“The job’s dynamic nature truly motivates me. No two days are the same in the fire service. I love the unpredictability,” he said. “I thrive in high-pressure situations where quick thinking and problem-solving are essential.”

“Whether it’s tackling a fire, responding to a medical emergency or managing a disaster, the adrenaline rush is something I find exhilarating. It’s this fast-paced, ever- changing environment that keeps me coming back, always ready to face the next challenge,” Ledford said.

Making a difference in people’s lives is most important to him. “Knowing that I play a vital role in ensuring safety and well-being of others is deeply fulfilling and gives me a strong sense of purpose.”

He first worked with Tuscumbia and Athens fire departments and Athens Limestone EMS and trained in fire suppression and emergency medicine. Ledford still works in Athens as a PRN employee.

In August 2015, Ledford joined Madison Fire Department as Firefighter/ EMT. Ledford completed both Advanced EMT and Paramedic (AAS degree) certification, qualifying for higher levels of emergency medical care. In 2022, he was promoted to Driver, assuming more responsibility by operating fire apparatus and coordinating teams. In June 2024, Ledford was appointed as Acting Captain, overseeing incident operations, mentoring newer firefighters and confirming firefighters are prepared for any emergency.

Learning about his award, Ledford felt honored and humbled. His recognition meant even more because of nominations from crew members, company officer and Battalion Chief. “To know my peers and leadership saw value in my efforts and hard work was deeply rewarding,” he said.

Ledford considers his recognition as a team award. “We’re only as strong as the crew around us. This award reflects constant support, encouragement and camaraderie of my team. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.

Ledford most enjoys driving Ladder 1. “It’s hard to picture (my work) getting better than responding to emergencies behind the wheel of that truck,” he said.

A difficult aspect of his job is the 24/48 schedule. “It’s hard to be away from family and personal commitments for extended periods, especially when important events come up,” he said. “The shift work can feel isolating at times and the lack of regular time off can sometimes lead to burnout.”

His nine-year-old daughter, Maralee, is a third-grader at Lindsey Lane Christian Academy. “She’s an energetic and enthusiastic kid who loves basketball and travel softball. We also share a special bond through hunting — she’s my favorite hunting buddy,” he said.

“Being a father is a big motivator for me. Balancing my work as a firefighter with the responsibilities of being a dad can be tough, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” Ledford said. “My daughter’s curiosity, energy and love keep me grounded and remind me every day of what’s most important.”
