Columbia to present ‘High School Musical Jr.’ this weekend

MADISON – For their 2025 musical, young actors at Columbia Elementary School will perform “High School Musical Jr.” this weekend.

Columbia will present the musical at the Dream Theatre Performing Arts Center, 3401 Holmes Ave. NW on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and March 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Dream Theatre’s site was formerly home of Butler High School Theatre.)

The show’s lead characters are Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez, Sharpay Evans and Ryan Evans. As the basketball star, Troy is the most popular person at East High School. Troy realizes his love of music but is too reserved to admit his interest. (sites.google.com/view/ryc-high-school-musical)

Sharpay Evans, twin sister of Ryan Evans, is a diehard fan of school musicals. No matter the cost, Sharpay will grab her theatre royalty as if her life depends on it. Sharpay’s twin brother, Ryan Evans is a rising star . . . in his mind. He tries to be a celebrity but is always dimmed by Sharpay’s theatrical aura and boastfulness.

The new kid on the block (and at school), Gabriella Montez wants to blend in, but it’s a difficult goal. Gabriella eventually falls romantically for her musical theatre friend, Troy Bolton.

A Disney creation, “High School Musical Jr.” focuses on the budding relationship between Troy and Gabriella. On a family vacation, the teenagers meet; their interest in each other explodes during a karaoke contest. Back on campus, their relationship strengthens by auditioning together.

However, East High’s current leading lady, Sharpay, complicates Troy and Gabriella’s plans. “High School Musical Jr.” is full of contagious songs and thrilling dance routines. The show examines the subjects of friendship, ‘puppy love’ and acceptance. (stageagent.com)

Columbia Drama Club is a volunteer-led, extracurricular organization that offers a one-hour musical each winter. The club aims to introduce youngsters to musical theatre by encouraging teamwork, confidence and technical abilities.

Each production is showcased as a full-scale musical using a traditional stage venue with professional sound, lighting, costuming, staging and choreography.

The cast is open to third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. Auditions begin mid-August. Rehearsals begin at the end of August and run through show dates, usually the end of January or February. Rehearsals are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday after school until 5 p.m.

Production staff for “High School Musical Jr.” includes Dana Herwig, Britney Deutschendorf, Jessica Krefting and Kayla Herwig. The cast includes 50 students.
