Bob Jones showcases power and depth as new baseball season dawns

MADISON – The defending 7A State Champion Bob Jones Patriots had a strong weekend of action including a no-hitter last Friday in Hoover.

The Pats took part in the Perfect Game High School Showdown at the Hoover Met with games that took place from last Thursday through Saturday.

Bob Jones finished the weekend with three wins and just one loss.

Feb. 27: Bob Jones 8, Presbyterian Christian (MS) 0

The Patriots dominated the Bobcats from Hattiesburg, Miss. last Thursday with a convincing shutout.

Bob Jones senior starting pitcher Tanner Hermesch tossed 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts and just one walk while allowing only two hits.

At the plate, the champs turned to the quality hitting of senior shortstop Myles Hammonds with three hits and a run scored.

Senior right fielder Dillon Adkins did his part with the bat as well collecting two hits with three RBIs in the drubbing of Presbyterian Christian.

The Bobcats were met with a barrage of runs by Bob Jones who tallied a run in the first, two in the second and third innings along with one in the fourth.

Already up 6-0, the Patriots scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to put a bow on the clinic.

Feb. 28: Cullman 2, Bob Jones 1

The Patriots’ lone defeat of the weekend came in the first game of Friday action with a narrow loss to Cullman.

Both teams scored its runs in the first inning and Cullman tallied two while Bob Jones managed just one.

Feb. 28: Bob Jones 8, Gainesville (GA) 0

Bob Jones bounced back from the early Friday loss with a no-hitter against the Red Elephants from Georgia in the later game.

Senior right-hander Cam Martin pitched seven hitless innings where he allowed two walks with 13 strikeouts in another blowout win.

Adkins terrorized Gainesville at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBIs in the victory.

March 1: Bob Jones 12, John Carroll 10

The Saturday game was another close one for Bob Jones who scored enough to fend off the Birmingham school John Carroll.

John Carroll scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump over Bob Jones 5-3.

The school from Madison scored a run in the third inning to pull within a run of John Carroll at 5-4.

John Carroll score three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to expand its lead to 8-4 after five innings. Bob Jones climbed back into the game with four runs in the top of the six to tie the contest at 8-8.

The game remained knotted up until the ninth inning where Bob Jones scored four runs in the top of the inning to lead 12-8.

When John Carroll came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, the school managed just two runs to fall to Bob Jones 12-10.

The Patriots have a home game this Friday against Helena High School at 4:30 p.m. They also play Saturday at Thompson High School.
