“Why I run the Rocket City Marathon”

MADISON – The 49th annual Rocket City Marathon has grown in size, stature and strength among the biggest events in North Alabama. More than 5,000 runners have registered to be a part of the five-race event scheduled for the three days this weekend throughout the streets of Huntsville. The marathon distance can be grueling both mentally and physically, but still people put themselves through the enervating athletic endeavor for an array of reasons.

The registration process included a questionnaire with one of the questions of “Why do you run?” Here are some of the answers from many of the 584 residents from Madison who have signed up to participate in the 2025 race weekend: David- “Because I like to drink beer.”

Jason- “I exited the Marine Corps in 2009, didn’t work out for years, which eventually caught up with me. I suffered a serious back injury in 2021. I ran two marathons in 2023 since then including Tokyo in 2024 and Chicago in 2025. My goal is to complete the Antarctica Marathon.”

Steven- “Because it’s my birthday.”

Rudolph- “I feel like I can conquer the day.”

Jamie- “I want to break the threehour mark.”

Andrew- “I run to justify my toxic eating habits.”

Tatiana- “After a 17-year relationship, my husband left our relationship with no warning. Now, I’m not afraid to do anything scary and I believe I can do it.”

Daniel- “I started running in March to get healthier, and 50 pounds later, the goal has evolved into this.”

Marissa- “I’ve only been half crazy running half-marathons. I felt this year it was time to go full crazy.”

Joshua- “Always hated running. Trying to face my weaknesses.”

Vanessa- “Fellowship with friends and time with God.”

Michelle- “My 51st half-marathon. Keeps me happy.”

Melissa- “I run to beat lung disease and Asthma.”

Ben- “Two years ago, I weighed 370 pounds and was very unhealthy. I got into Orange Theory Fitness and running. I’m down to 270, and I’m ready for the half-marathon.”

Christina- “To be strong and a fun mom.”

Aaron- “Because my wife is making me.”

Lanell- “Running from fatness and illness.”

Caila- “I had ACL surgery and this is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Huy- “My husband made me do it.”

Peng- “They say life comes at you fast. I woke up one morning and realized I was in my 40’s and haven’t yet run a marathon.”

Good luck to all as the 49th running of the 26.2-mile marathon will feature 1,772 runners from six countries and 48 states. May the wind be at your back.
