Trash Pandas claim second-half crown with 12-9 win in Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, TN — The Rocket City Trash Pandas (72-65, 37-32) clinched the 2026 Southern League North Division Second Half Championship Sunday afternoon, defeating the Chattanooga Lookouts (59-79, 22-47) 12-9 at Erlanger Park to finish 1.5 games ahead of Knoxville. Rocket City completed the regular season with the second-best record in club history and hosted the Smokies on Tuesday to open the best-of-three Southern League North Division Series.
The 72-win finish trails only the 2022 club’s 81-57 season in franchise history. Rocket City finished September 7-5, hitting 24 home runs and scoring 85 runs in 12 games to secure its first postseason appearance since 2022.
The season also featured a franchise-record 38-game onbase streak by Jake Munroe and the third no-hitter in club history, combined by Austin Gordon, Lucas Mahlstedt and Minacci at Birmingham. Tucker Flint finished with a club-record 69 RBI while establishing himself as Rocket City’s career leader in games, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, RBI and walks.
The Trash Pandas now turn to a postseason rematch with Knoxville, which defeated Rocket City in three games in the 2022 North Division Series. Game 1 was held Tuesday at Toyota Field.

In Sunday’s game against Chattanooga, Arjun Nimmala broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer in the eighth, Caleb Bartolero collected three extra-base hits and four RBI, and Anthony Scull added a three-run blast in the ninth as the Trash Pandas secured their fifth victory in the six-game series.
The finale capped a powerful week for Rocket City, which led Minor League Baseball with 66 hits, tied for the most doubles with 19, ranked second with 54 runs and tied for third with 14 home runs. The Trash Pandas and Lookouts combined for 30 homers and 95 runs across the six games.
Nimmala supplied the decisive swing after Chattanooga erased a four-run deficit in the seventh. With the score tied 7-7, Mac McCroskey singled with one out in the eighth and stole second before Nimmala drove a Thomas Farr (L, 1-3) offering over the left-center-field wall for a 9-7 lead.
The homer completed another standout performance for Nimmala, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. He finished the series batting .417 (10-for-24) with four doubles, four home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored. Eight of his 10 hits went for extra bases.
Nimmala closed the regular season with seven September home runs, four doubles and 11 RBI in 11 games, extending his on-base streak to 19 games. Sunday’s go-ahead blast followed his first career multi-homer game Thursday, when his ninth-inning two-run shot also put Rocket City ahead.
Bartolero helped put the Trash Pandas in position to win long before the late-inning fireworks. After Ruben Ibarra’s three-run homer gave Chattanooga a 3-0 lead in the first, Bartolero answered with a solo shot to center in the second, his eighth homer with Rocket City.
He struck again in the third. Consecutive one-out walks to Cole Fontenelle, Jake Munroe and Tucker Flint loaded the bases, and Bartolero cleared them with a double to center for a 4-3 lead. Eddie Micheletti Jr. followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3.
Bartolero doubled again in the fifth, putting runners at second and third for Micheletti, whose two-run double extended the advantage to 7-3.
Bartolero finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, three runs scored and four RBI. He batted .385 (10-for-26) during the series with three doubles, two homers, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored, closing his Rocket City season with a .288 average and 55 RBI.
Micheletti matched Bartolero with three hits Sunday, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Together, they accounted for six hits, four doubles and seven RBI.
Starter Eybersson Polanco settled in after Ibarra’s first-inning homer, holding Chattanooga scoreless over his final four innings. He allowed three runs on four hits over five innings, walking two and striking out five.
The Lookouts pulled even against José Gonzalez (W, 5-4)in the seventh. Carlos Sanchez hit a solo homer, Cade Hunter followed a Michael Trautwein single with a two-run shot, and Ibarra homered for the second time to tie the game.
Nimmala immediately restored Rocket City’s lead, and Camden Minacci protected it with a perfect eighth inning that included two strikeouts.
Scull provided valuable insurance in the ninth. With two outs, Micheletti walked, and Juan Flores reached on an error before Scull lined a three-run homer to right, his fifth with Rocket City, stretching the lead to 12-7.
Chattanooga scored twice in the bottom half, but Kenyon Yovan induced a groundout from Pablo Aliendo to end the game and secure the division title.
Rocket City finished with 11 hits, eight for extra bases, and went 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The Trash Pandas also won the season series against Chattanooga, 14-10.
