Senators prove they mean business in win over Hazel Green
GADSDEN – Sparkman raised suspicions when it lost a close one to highly-rated Spain Park to open the football season.
For real, or an aberration, the setback notwithstanding? In the three games since the Senators have answered the question– they mean business in 2026.
The latest proof came via a 5917 win on the road at Hazel Green in a Class 6A, Region 4 game for the squad’s third-straight win.
The Senators (3-1, 2-0 region) seek to lengthen their winning streak to four against Huntsville (2-2, 1-1) Friday night at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium.
“Every practice, every day, we’re getting better,” Sparkman head coach Ronnie Watson said. “We’re trying to focus on us and do the things we’ve gotta do to make sure we’re successful in the end.’’
Against Hazel Green, the Senators had 39 rushes for 309 Yards and five touchdowns for a hefty 8.0 average per carry.
Senior Waylon Marbury had 14 carries for 90 yards and three TDs, senior Braylon Lawson had 12 for 80 with two TDs and sophomore Daniel Maxtion completed 8-of-11 passing for 53 yards.
Senior Swiss army knife Josh Naylon was 3-for-4 passing for 40 yards, was 5-of-6 on receiving targets for 51 yards and rushed six times for 114 yards and a TD.
In the aftermath of Sparkman’s latest win, Watson said the Senators already had an eye on the trip to Huntsville this week.
“We’ll enjoy this one through (Saturday) and get back to work on Sunday and get ready to go,’’ he said after the win. “I mean, I’ve already sent the coach’s film. We’ll start working on the bus ride home.”
