Chargers win shootout, advance to GSC semifinals

JACKSON, Tenn. — The University of Alabama in Huntsville women’s soccer team won a penalty shootout 4-2 against Union on Sunday to advance to the Gulf South Conference Championship semifinals for the first time since 2013.

The sixth-seeded Chargers (7-7-2, 5-5-1) converted all four attempts after playing third-seeded Union (5-4-6, 5-1-5) to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtime periods. RK Naman, Prescott Hull and Chelsey Curtis scored before Caila Batchelor delivered the clinching kick to send UAH into the next round.

CeCe Szopa anchored the Chargers in goal with 10 saves over 110 minutes, including three in overtime, to help force the shootout.

Kaitlyn Lewis put UAH ahead in the 13th minute, scoring off an assist from Campbell Tarentino. The Chargers carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime before Union equalized in the 52nd minute.

Carley White led UAH with four shots, including three on goal, as the Chargers finished with 13 shots and eight on target.

UAH will face Lee in the semifinals at 6 p.m. CT Friday, Nov. 6, at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex Championship Field in Huntsville.
