Clark meets goals, gets raise

Happy members of the Madison City Schools Board of Education have smiled on Superintendent Dr. Henry Clark once again with applause and a hefty raise.
Clark recently received $9,400 of a possible $10,000 third year raise in addition to his current $130,000 annual salary. He received $8,000 last year.
Two years remain of his five-year contract.
Board vice president Sue Helms said it is important for Madison residents to know that goals have been set for Clark and the board holds him accountable to meet those goals.
"It would be irresponsible to just say he's done a good job and hand him the whole amount without following the process," Helms said.
Clark's five goals for the 2001-02 school year:
* Implement strategies to increase the number of Madison students who passed the state's High School Graduation Exam by 10 percent.
* Implement the system's Strategic and Capital plans,
* Complete revisions of all board policies.
* Recommend a solution for problems with extracurricular activities for ninth grade students who have been displaced from the high school setting.
* Buy land for two new schools and a stadium.
Clark's lowest scoring category was the problem of ninth grade extracurricular activities. Board members called it a stretch goal and later approved Clark's recommendation to make Bobby Jackson the new system-wide athletic director.
The board also considered staff evaluations of Clark before approving the raise. The performance results consistently placed him in the 90th percentile of almost every category.
Clark also presented the board with a self-evaluation at the last meeting.
Clark received an annual $4,000 "stay raise" and $5,400 merit raise based on the total evaluation.
In other business, the board:
* Approved Bob Jones High School Assistant Principal Robert Parker as Discovery Middle School principal.
* Approved Bobby Jackson, BJHS athletic director, as central office administrative assistant. Jackson will serve as system-wide athletic director, a truancy officer and an assistant to transportation issues to Dr. Dee Fowler through the position.
* Approved the transfer of BJHS teacher and coach Todd Carter to Discovery Middle School. He will serve as head football coach.
* Hired Alvin Rauls as head baseball coach and driver's education teacher at BJHS.
* Approved a bid for approximately $42,000 for system-wide computer software upgrades.
* Approved a $160,000 bid from Stewart Electric for practice field lights at BJHS.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. in the audio/visual room at Bob Jones High School. A budget meeting will be held the same night at 6 p.m.
